Emily Keener at Awards Ceremony

As many of you *may* have noticed, I have not updated this site for almost a year. Sorry about that…

About a year ago I took on another job, although I didn’t realize that my new responsibility was going to be so time consuming.

Last year, my daughter developed a passion for guitar and songwriting. Turns out that she’s pretty darn good. I have spent the last year being her sounding board, recording engineer, chauffeur, web site and graphic designer and all around manager.

Recently, she won a songwriting contest put on by Janine Turner’s Constituting America and we got to spend 5 days in Philadelphia filming a music video and a documentary and performed on the stage at the National Constitution Center.

And… she gets to be the Huckabee show on FoxNews this Saturday, October 15th to perform her song with Governor Huckabee and the Little Rockers.

You can check out her winning song at the Constituting America website, or see some of her other stuff at www.emilykeener.com

I wish I could tell you what the plans are for this site, but I just don’t know. The Facebook branch of Stand Like A Rock is still faithfully posting articles of importance and I’m hoping to be able to teach her how to update the website as well.

In the meantime, check out the Facebook page for Stand Like A Rock.

Dismantling America
by Thomas Sowell
(Basic Books, 341 pages, $27.95)

America, it seems, is always in decline.

Searching through Amazon.com reveals plenty of works arguing that America’s best days are behind her. From the 1974 novel The Decline and Fall of America; to William Dietrich’s 1991 book, In the Shadow of the Rising Sun: The Political Roots of American Economic Decline, about Japan’s inevitable surpassing of America economically; to the more recent The Death of the West by the always upbeat Patrick Buchanan, most such works of gloom-and-doom have usually been followed by years of tremendous peace and prosperity. After a while it is hard to take any book about American decline seriously.

However, if there a reason to treat the idea of our society’s fall with grave concern, it is that a book has now been written about it by Thomas Sowell.

Entitled Dismantling America, it is a collection of some of his more recent newspaper columns grouped into five sections — government policies, political issues, economic issues, cultural issues, and legal issues — with some added commentary beginning each section. Continue reading »

Even moderately observant Americans realize Obama’s policies strongly favor unions. But why? Some believe simply because unions helped deliver his presidency. But, do more basic and sinister motives lurk beneath the surface? In Marxism, great emphasis is placed on use of unions to advance socialism. French historian of labor Michel Collinet claims… “The control of labor unions was, and still remains, the principle objective of Communist parties in industrialized countries.”

Given immense potential for shutdown and sabotage, and for use as vehicles of propaganda and agitation, unions remain indispensable tools of Marxist ambition. Unions contributed an estimated $400 million to Obama’s presidential campaign. Despite comprising only 9% of US workers, labor unions are still key to socialist schemes, and still have potential to badly damage our democracy. This essay argues unions are crucial to Obama’s plans for socializing America. Continue reading »

To the contemporary conservative, progressive ideology is often murky and incomprehensible.  It is very difficult for some on the right to understand the apparently illogical and unrealistic machinations of the radical leftist mindset.  Their political objectives, if achieved, inevitably lead to further demands for concessions toward an ever-greater ideological purity.

Something even darker and more malevolent is happening, however.  The various radical leftist factions and special interest groups are rapidly coalescing into a global movement.

A comprehensive and enlightening treatise on this topic was recently published in Orbis, the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s journal of world affairs, written by University of Buffalo professor Ernest Sternberg.  The article is titled, “Purifying the World: What the New Radical Ideology Stands For”.  It will open your eyes and scare you to death.

In Steinberg’s analysis, from the historical ashes of failed fascist and communist regimes a new totalitarian ideology is emerging: Continue reading »

59 Days Into Oil Crisis, Gulf Coast Governors Say Feds Are Failing Them

By DAVID MUIR and BRADLEY BLACKBURN
ABCNews, June 17, 2010

Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state’s oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor’s wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.

“It’s the most frustrating thing,” the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. “Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges.”

Sixteen barges sat stationary today, although they were sucking up thousands of gallons of BP’s oil as recently as Tuesday. Workers in hazmat suits and gas masks pumped the oil out of the Louisiana waters and into steel tanks. It was a homegrown idea that seemed to be effective at collecting the thick gunk.

“These barges work. You’ve seen them work. You’ve seen them suck oil out of the water,” said Jindal. Continue reading »
