The Real Problem Is Not the Mosque, but the Nukes ~ American Thinker
All the energy devoted to this issue of the Ground Zero Mosque is distracting us from the far more serious problem of Iran’s nuclear weapons program. If this more fundamental problem is properly addressed, then the NYC mosque issue will become irrelevant.

Where in the world have I been? I’ve been asked that quite a lot lately. I have been trying to salvage what little bit remains of my sanity.

Since the purpose of this sight is to highlight what is going on in our country and our world, it is obviously necessary for me to spend much of my time immersed in depressing information.

When it got to the point that the only thing I wanted to do was acquire the plans to build this awesome bunker, I figured I should take a break.

I wish I could say that I had thought about it long and hard and come to the conclusion that I needed to step away for a bit in order to better care for my family. In reality, it was more like a moment of absolute inability to look at one more news headline. I have spent the last few weeks finding my way back to a more balanced outlook on things. And, yes, I still want the bunker, but we installed a pool instead. If the world’s going to go up in flames, we might as well swim while we wait. Just kidding, kind of. We did install a pool. And I do want  a bunker. Someday.

Anyway, I apologize for my absence. I’m pretty sure most of you can relate to just wanting to tune it all our for a while. I wish I could say I’ll never abandon you again, but you’ll have to settle for some sort of vague assurance that I’ll at least try not to disappear for so long again.

Sincerely,

Jenny

It’s a little less crazy than it sounds.

It was September of 1966, and gas was gushing uncontrollably from the wells in the Bukhara province of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. But the Reds, at the height of their industrial might, had a novel solution. They drilled nearly four miles into the sand and rock of the Kyzyl Kum Desert, and lowered a 30-kiloton nuclear warhead — more than half-again as large as “Little Boy,” the crude uranium bomb dropped over Hiroshima — to the depths beneath the wellhead. With the pull of a lever, a fistful of plutonium was introduced to itself under enormous pressure, setting off the chain reaction that starts with E = MC2 and ends in Kaboom! The ensuing blast collapsed the drill channel in on itself, sealing off the well.

The Soviets repeated the trick four times between 1966 and 1979, using payloads as large as 60 kilotons to choke hydrocarbon leaks. Now, as the Obama administration stares into the abyss of the Deepwater Horizon spill, and a slicker of sweet, medium crude blankets the Gulf of Mexico, slouching its way toward American beaches and wetlands, Russia’s newspaper of record is calling on the president to consider this literal “nuclear option.” Continue reading »

When the nine members of the Hutaree militia group were arrested in late March near Adrian, Michigan, the MSM ran hard with the story.  Within 48 hours, the template was set: A “right-wing extremist Christian” militia group had been planning to wreak havoc by killing law enforcement officers as a way to engage a wider war against the government.

Soon the MSM had the Hutarees tried, convicted and jailed.

The U.S. middle class is sinking into government-provided economic quicksand.

U.S. living standards have declined ever since 1970; vanished stay-at-home moms were the alarm bell. In 1950, 37% of working- age women worked; by 2005, 75% were working, including 71% of moms with school-aged kids1. Laborsaving products and services cushioned the change, but the two-earner family lost ground even with lots of new gadgets. Typical U.S. households earned less in 2009 than a decade earlier2; median household income is still declining. Even with two earners, many live closer to the poverty line than did families in the ’70s3. Middle-class family savings turned into consumer and mortgage debt, which reached 134% of household income at the end of 20074. Continue reading »

Even the highest technology produced by the world’s finest companies can be fallible and fatal.

by Charles Krauthammer
National Review Online, February 25, 2010

Amazingly, the congressional hearings on Toyota were relatively civilized. Apart from some inevitable theatrical hectoring, the questioning was generally respectful, the emotions controlled. This was all the more remarkable given the drama of some of the testimony, such as that offered by a tearful Rhonda Smith, who recounted how, in her runaway Lexus, she had called her husband because “I wanted to hear his voice one more time.”

Such wrenching and compelling stories might impel you to want to string up the first Toyota executive you find. But the issue here is larger and highly complex.

Industrial society produces an astonishing array of mass-produced products — cars, drugs, medical devices — that are at once wondrous and potentially lethal. Continue reading »
